In fact feeling out of control can be one of the biggest and most common triggers for high levels of anxiety.
A lack of autonomy over our situation can leave us feeling vulnerable and exposed to potential threats.
After all, you can’t easily feel happy if you don’t feel safe.
However, the sooner we learn to accept the very simple fact that we have little or no control of what life is going to throw at us, the sooner we can allow our focus to return to the only thing that we truly have control of... and that is ourself.
Our attempts to control the uncontrollable inevitably lead to a feeling of helplessness and anxiety, and it’s often our attempts to exert influence over these external factors (what might happen tomorrow, what other people might think, what other people are doing) that results in us losing control of ourself.
If we practice the very simple exercise of focusing our emotional energies on our own responses and our own actions, we very quickly start to feel back in control of our journey through life and our place as main character in our own story.
In these uncertain times it would be all too easy to put our focus on those uncertainties and subsequently lose control of ourselves in the process.
Don’t waste your energies trying to control the uncontrollable.
Keep control of you. That’s what will ultimately see you through this difficult time... by being the person YOU decide to be, no matter what life throws at you.
