KEEP BEING YOU

Trying to fit in with those around you can be exhausting.

I remember when I was at school and I would desperately try to find a social group that would accept me. I’d do my best to look like them and to be interested in the same things as they were, all in an attempt to be accepted for who I was.

Except, in my attempt to do that I was showing them precisely who I wasn’t.

Any acceptance we achieve by fitting in with others is ultimately unsustainable. Even the best actors have to stop pretending at some point.

Also, if our strategy for happiness is to present the version of ourselves that others will like best, then what happens when we are with people who want something different?
What happens when we are with new people, and we can’t quickly assess what version of ourself they would like to see?
What happens when we are in groups where different people like different things?

Like I said, it’s exhausting, and ultimately it doesn’t work.

Fortunately there is a simple solution.

Decide today to only be the person YOU want to be.

Embrace all the strange idiosyncrasies that make you the wonderful, weird, and entirely unique person you are.

You don’t have to keep anybody else happy with who you are. Your job is to simply be yourself and find out who likes that person.
Some will. Some won’t.
That’s ok.
You can’t keep everyone happy, and you shouldn’t be trying to.
Your focus should be on keeping YOU happy.

Being you is where you find happiness, because being you is what comes naturally.
Being you is effortless.
Being you is what you’re best at.
